Choosing the right Carrier Oil for you – part 1

Rating that Carrier Oil

It is worthwhile to put some thought into which carrier oil(s) you should use in your skin care products, rather than simply defaulting to coconut oil. This even includes homemade sugar scrubs, shaving creams, and deodorants! Each carrier oil comes with its own unique abilities to help support the body in a different way and of course each person is different in what their skin needs. There are two immediate things you should consider when choosing a carrier oil, and those are the comedogenic and absorption ratings.

1) Comedogenic Ratings
How likely a substance will clog the pores
The scale runs from 0 – 5.
“0” being a substance that will not clog your pores and “5” being a substance that is highly likely to clog your pores.

If you are acne prone it is suggested that you choose products that rate between 0-2 on the comedogenic scale.

2) Absorption Ratings
How well a substance will absorb into the skin

The scale runs from A- E.
“A” being a substance that is easily absorbed into the skin, leaving no oily feel, “D” being a substance that absorbs very slowly, leaving a sticky, waxy, or very oil feel.  Or “E” being a substance that leaves an oily protective layer on the skin, acting as a barrier.

Last thing to Consider

Once you have narrowed down to a few carrier oils that could work for your unique skin needs, the last thing to consider is what the oil is able to target. For instance if you have scarring you want to focus on choose an oil that is known to assist scar fading. If you have aging and sagging skin then choose an oil that is known to tone and help diminish fine wrinkles. The list continues. It is actually really fun mixing all my oils together! I feel like a hippy scientist when all my oils are out and I am mixing and matching into different glass bottles. Not to mention using these ingredients have completely transformed my skin!
